About

Check in. Stay connected. Every step.

Firstep is childcare management software built by someone who spent a few years signing a clipboard twice a day and wondering what it actually proved.

Why this exists

Most childcare software was built to sell a feature list. The daily reality of running a center is narrower than that and considerably more stubborn: knowing who is in the building right now, being able to prove who took a child home, telling forty families what happened today without writing forty messages, and collecting tuition without a spreadsheet and a stack of reminder emails.

Firstep starts from the record rather than the feature list. Every check-in and check-out is an event with a verification method attached — scanned on-site, confirmed by location, or entered by a staff member who watched it happen. Everything else in the product is built on top of a log you can actually stand behind.

Who is building it

Firstep is built and run by Bryan St. Clair, an independent software developer in California. Not a venture-backed team, not an outsourced roadmap — one person who ships, answers the support email, and talks to the schools using it.

That shapes the product in ways worth knowing up front. Development happens in stages rather than all at once, so pilot schools genuinely influence what comes next. Support goes to a person who wrote the code. And there is no growth target that requires signing schools the product is not ready for.

How we think about pricing

Published, in full, on the pricing page. Every competitor in this category makes a director sit through a discovery call before naming a number, and that is a deliberate choice on their part — it works because switching costs are high and comparison is hard.

Our approach is the opposite: the whole bracket table is on the site, the rate falls as you grow, and there is no setup fee or annual contract. If the number does not work for your center, you can find that out in thirty seconds without talking to anybody.

How we think about children's data

The people using Firstep are parents and staff. The data inside it is about children — which is a different and heavier obligation, and one that follows the data rather than the login.

In practice that means each school's records are isolated from every other school's at the database level, sensitive fields are encrypted where they sit, photos live in private storage reached only through short-lived links after a permission check, and location data is stripped from images on upload. There is more detail on the security page.

Where it stands today

Firstep is in active development and onboarding pilot schools. Verified check-in and check-out, the daily summary email, immunization records, and live ratio tracking come first. Classroom photos and incident reports follow, then messaging, then billing, then the companion web interface.

We would rather tell you that plainly than imply a finished product and disappoint you in month two. If you want to be part of shaping the order of it, get in touch.
